Fun Hat Videos

Here's a bunch of fun and funny hat videos that feature some of the felted hats that I have made in the past few years. After all, I have access to a lot of hats; it's like having the keys to a whimsical theatrical costume shop!

Why I Started Making Videos

In order to please the Instagram gods, I started making videos. Yes, I confess that was the initial shallow motivation.

However, using Instagram's REELS for editing was so clunky and led to much frustration. Yet, I perservered, trying various apps for my Android phone. Finally, I found an intuitive app that didn't crash - Kinemaster

Really, I LOVE making videos because they are a way to play with color and movement. Also, playing around with sound has been 'ear-opening'!

Moreover, working in the medium of short video (less than 30 seconds) is helping me to practice storytelling. As you may know, there should be a beginning, a middle and an end to every story. For me, the latter is the hardest part. It's a challenge to resolve or give a twist to what is usually a rather light and ephermeral story. Honestly, in the classic fairytale, The Three Bears, there is more time for character development. Alas, with an Instagram Reel it needs to be super-fast!

Most of all, making short videos helped to entertain and cheer folks stuck in their homes during the Pandemic Lockdown. Wonderfully, many people have told me that they look forward to seeing what I share on Instagram because it helps make them happy!

Other Learning Experiences

Not surprisingly, video-making comes together in an entirely different way from the craft of feltmaking. Naturally, a digital video has much less physical process compared to that of wet feltmaking. But, that cannot be the only reason why I adore it.

  • Is it that I get to tell jokes? Not literally, but visually!
  • Additionally, I get to combine ideas from paintings, movies, and pop culture on the fly?
  • Or perhaps, that it's more cerebral?

Not that my films are at all brainy! In fact, the sillier, the better! The intention is to create a smile.

The Videos

Below, are a few videos for your amusement. There are bunches more over on YouTube, along with the orginals over on my Instagram.
